You never think that in between factories and businesses there would be a place full of nature like Discovery Nature Sanctuary in Winkler, Manitoba. It’s just perfect for a moment of relaxation after a day of work which was exactly what I did, and it made my day!
I arrived there around 4:30 pm just after my day shift. I took the Provincial Trunk Hwy 14 and turned right on Eastview Dr. The entrance to the Sanctuary was on my right side in a small area with a pumping station and not very well signalized. Not fancy at all but as people say “Don’t judge the book by the cover”, I took a leap of faith.
This was my first outdoors exploration after landing in Canada last September. So I was pretty excited!
Don’t fool yourself, Manitoba is VERY windy and so it was on this early October day. Here in the prairies, there are no hills nor mountains, it’s all flat, therefore, be prepared for some twisted crazy hairs on your face. Good thing, I have short hair though!
Make sure to wear comfortable clothing and a nice pair of snickers. Of course, your look must follow the weather forecast, so always check it before anything else.
Signs were informing that no pets are allowed and that only authorized vehicles can access the area.
I entered the trail and started to notice small coloured flags along the path pointing out that specific plants have been planted recently. As I went further in, I saw a few benches perfect for bird watchers. The silence and peace around filled my heart with joy and made me thank God once more for the opportunity to live in this wonderful country.
The highlight of the place is surely a wooden deck in a small lake! Two benches are set on the deck so that you can enjoy the beauty of the area along with the current of the water. The sunshine was great at the moment and I captured a few pictures.
The Sanctuary brings you closer to nature, renovates your energy and allows the practice of meditation.
A HUGE plus was the small little bridges around that make perfect photograph backgrounds. Too bad I am not a pro in pictures, but if you are, enjoy it!
If you wish to spend long hours exploring there is also a very well-maintained public bathroom, clean and tidy. So don’t worry, take your time around, you are safe.
The Sanctuary has 32-acre filled with many different birds species, ducks, turtle, insects, amphibians, and even some mammals. Some trees hold bird’s nests set to make sure they live around the area. If you are a nature lover, this place will get your heart!
I believe it’s so important to have places like this to escape the routine and stress of work. Besides, it is a good option for school trips when students may have a taste of how nature works on its own.
So whenever you feel like going for a stroll, remember Discovery Nature Sanctuary. Bring your family for some outdoors moment, you won’t regret it!
